About Me

Justin Barish [b. 1990] is a Korean-American composer of contemporary art music whose work is often characterized by its' violent textures and extreme sound worlds. His work has been programmed by artists and organizations such as The Ludovico Ensemble, New Gallery Concert Series, Equilibrium Concert Series, The Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble, Eric Hewitt, Marti Epstein, Bethanne Walker, Transient Canvas, and Kent O'Doherty as well as being featured at the 2012 Boston Conservatory New Music Festival "Focus Under 40." Recent commissions include musicians from The New England Conservatory, The San Francisco Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, and Conservatorium van Amsterdam. His wind ensemble piece Machine Music is featured on the 2013 Albany Records CD The Unheard Music. A passionate advocate for the performance of contemproary and new music, he has performed as a percussionist in the 2010 Boston Conservatory New Music Festival and has conducted performances ranging from Haydn to over a dozen world premieres.

Barish is a graduate of The Boston Conservatory with academic honors, studying with Dalit Warshaw, Andy Vores, and Marti Epstein as well as participating in masterclasses with Simon Bainbridge and Samuel Adler. His accolades include winner of the 2011 Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble Composition Competition and upon graduation, the 2012 Roger Sessions Memorial Award for Composition.
